What is vertical scaling?

Vertical scaling refers to adding more computational resources such as RAM, CPU, etc. to the server (either database or application server) as per the demand.
Vertical scaling is done to increase the input/output operations, amplification of CPU/RAM capacity as well as the disk capacity.
