2012 Elections in Maharashtra has a new winner- eNlight Cloud
The 2012 Municipal Corporation Elections in Maharashtra not only saw some head turning trends, with the dark horses emerging out of the shadow basking in the glory of popular support and power, but also saw technology break barriers like never before. The MAHASEC (Maharashtra State Election Commission) website sailed smoothly through sudden traffic spikes thanks to ESDS' eNlight Cloud!!
MAHASEC website is designed by Ultimate ITPL, a leading IT company based out of Pune, who partnered with ESDS Software Solution, a leading Datacenter Solutions provider in Nasik, to host the MAHASEC Technology Platform. ESDS recommended its indigenous Cloud Hosting solution, aptly named 'eNlight'; which promises unmatched automatic scalability at optimum economics. Even though ESDS has been hosting MAHASEC website since June 2011, the real test came at the time of the recently concluded elections in Maharashtra that saw an encouraging turnout.
The MAHASEC website experienced constant rise in traffic as the election date closed in. As anxiety levels regarding the candidates, their information, lists etc rose, so did the number of hits the site garnered each day. As anticipated, the MAHASEC website was flooded on the day of Result Declaration, 17th February 2012 which sealed the fate of many. The site served more than 16,000 connections simultaneously at any given point in time throughout the day and 40 search hits per second in Mumbai alone with continuous queries being executed. The high website traffic was a perfect recipe for disaster if it wasn't for eNlight, which automatically scaled up the website's hardware peaking at 72 GB RAM and 24 CPUs ensuring that the site was up and running at all times with instant computing resource allocation happening automatically. eNlight ensured complete uptime and a hassle free results broadcast. It all worked like well oiled machinery, supported by eNlight's multiple features; one of them being Template Storage where settings of an existing Virtual Machine's (VM) could be saved and instantly replicated while creating a new VM rather than starting from scratch, saving precious time.

As told to our correspondent by a MAHASEC Representative, a setup to host a website of this scale would have required huge hardware infrastructure with around 60 Active Servers complete with various software licences. This would have resulted in huge capital outflows and considerable expenses. Same was the case with Nasik Mahanagar Palika. In a bid to ensure that the citizens are kept abreast with the latest developments, they designed a website that would display real time results including votes counting process as well as area wise trends. All went as planned, but the biggest challenge was to maintain 100% uptime when the results would be announced. This website, www.nashikelection2012.in, was hit by huge amount of traffic with over 1200 connections at a given point in time. On the day of Result Declaration, eNlight intelligently scaled the resources up to 16 CPUs and more than 8 GB of RAM with 13 GB of Bandwidth to support 9.8 lakh hits that the site received.
