ESDS Successfully Implements IPv6 In Its Data Center

We are pleased to inform you that we have successfully implemented IPv6 in our Data Center. ESDS can now start offering IPv6 IP address to customers. IPv6 is a new IP stack technology providing better features as compared to IPv4. And what's even better, its Absolutely Free! Following are the major advantages of IPv6 over IPv4. 1. Large Address space : IPv4 is a 32 bits long address, so it can provide a maximum of 4.2 billion addresses, which are not always sufficient. Nowadays, more and more people need global addresses. At this rate, within a few years, IPv4 addresses will not be available. IPv6 fulfills this requirement since it is a 128 bits long address, and can easily facilitate a large number of addresses. We have enough IPv4 addresses to provide 1500 IPv6 address on each sq. inch of earth. This will ensure absolutely no shortage of IPv6 addresses. 2. Security : IPSec, which provides confidentiality, authentication and data integrity, is baked into IPv6. Because of their potential to carry malware, IPv4 ICMP packets are often blocked by corporate firewalls, but in case of ICMPv6, the implementation of the Internet Control Message Protocol may be permitted because IPSec can be applied to the ICMPv6 packets. 3. Support for New Services : By eliminating Network Address Translation (NAT), true end-to-end connectivity at the IP layer is restored, enabling new and valuable services. Peer-to-peer networks are easier to create and maintain, and services such as VoIP and Quality of Service (QoS) become more robust. 4. Directed Data Flows : IPv6 supports multicast rather than broadcast. Multicast allows bandwidth-intensive packet flows (like multimedia streams) to be sent to multiple destinations simultaneously, saving network bandwidth. Disinterested hosts no longer need to process broadcast packets. In addition to that, the IPv6 header has a new field, named Flow Label, that can identify packets belonging to the same flow. 5. More Efficient Packet Processing : IPv6's simplified packet header makes packet processing more efficient. As compared to IPv4, IPv6 contains no IP-level checksum, so the checksum does not need to be recalculated at every router hop. Getting rid of the IP-level checksum was possible because most link-layer technologies already contain checksum and error-control capabilities. In addition, most transport layers, which handle end-to-end connectivity, have a checksum that enables error detection. System requirements to implement IPv6 : Hardware and software both must support IPv6 address. Software support: All current operating systems for host computers and end users support IPv6 in their base installation. Functionality and support for the basic IPv6 features is solid and either activated by default or requires only few manual configurations. Hardware support : Servers Hardware: IPv6 is not dependent on Server hardware. Network devices: Layer2 switches do not work at IP packet, so they are independent of IPv4 or IPv6. Layer3 switches and routers work at IP layer. All the latest network devices support IPv6. Usually these devices are at the ISP end. Dual Stack Approach : In dual stack approach, server can have both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses assigned simultaneously. When any request will come from an IPv4 IP address, server uses IPv4 stack to respond and when a request comes from IPv6 address, IPv6 stack will be used to respond. Assigning IPv6 address is simple; as soon as we assign IPv6 address to server; all the services running on server detect IPv6 addresses automatically. Cost : As of now there is no cost for IPv6 IP address as ESDS wants to promote IPv6 usage. How to get IPv6 address : To get IPv6 address please contact your Account Manager/CRM/Sales executive.
