The Apache HTTP Server is a robust, commercial-grade open source Web server developed by the Apache Software Foundation. Red Hat Enterprise Linux includes the Apache HTTP Server 2.0 as well as a number of server modules designed to enhance its functionality.
The Apache HTTP Server, commonly referred to as Apache (pronounced /??pæt?i?/), is web server software notable for playing a key role in the initial growth of the World Wide Web.In 2009 it became the first web server software to surpass the 100 million web site milestone.Apache was the first viable alternative to the Netscape Communications Corporation web server (currently known as Oracle iPlanet Web Server), and has since evolved to rival other Unix-based web servers in terms of functionality and performance. The majority of web servers using Apache run a Unix-like operating system.
If the Apache HTTP Server configured with the HTTP Configuration Tool in previous versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and then performed an upgrade, you can use the HTTP Configuration Tool to migrate the configuration file to the new format for version 2.0. Start the HTTP Configuration Tool, make any changes to the configuration, and save it. The configuration file saved will be compatible with version 2.0.
Features of Apache HTTP Server 2.0
Apache API — Modules utilize a more powerful set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).
Filtering — Modules can act as content filters. Refer to Section 10.2.4 Modules and Apache HTTP Server 2.0 for more on how filtering works.
IPv6 Support — The next generation IP addressing format is supported.
