Six Myths About Cloud Computing
Insecure, simple, worshiped by the CFOs, only brings benefits to the business, cannot be used in all situations and is always cheaper. Is it?
For some years, all we heard about the cloud was mostly excitement. It will be the next hop in processor technology, the experts said. Will reduce complexity, improve flexibility and make IT more strategic to the business, said the sellers. It will be great when it arrives, traders said.
And it begins to arrive. It is a fact. The budgets for the implementation of pilot projects begin to increase substantially, driven mainly by the flexibility and economy offered by the model. But some myths persist.
They are:
1. Cloud Computing is insecure
People are afraid of losing control. But just because your data is in another location, does not mean they are less – or more – safe. Testing, monitoring and review. The only way to mitigate the risk inside or outside the cloud.
2. It is very simple
Vendors will always present the cloud computing solutions as something simple and fast. But moving customized systems to the cloud takes time – eight months or more to normalize and test the new environment. And modify cloud systems with care. Each additional configuration in the cloud has the potential to become a source of pain-to-head.
3. CFOs love the model
Here is the problem: The cloud makes the CAPEX flexible in operating expenses (OPEX). But your company may not want that. The assumption is that there is a preference for economic OPEX over CAPEX. But not all businesses want to OPEX, CAPEX want some. There are companies who prefer the model with fixed costs of operation, by virtue of stamp tax issues.
4. Only the business benefits
Most CIOs flaunt the cost reductions provided by the use of the cloud. But there is no law against reinvesting in IT.
5. It cannot be used for central systems
That is not very common but does not mean that it cannot be done.
6. It is always cheaper
One of my friends was looking for a tool that would enable single sign-on across multiple systems. The cost of the solution increases in a reasonable manner.
