If we already have DR why do we need BaaS separately ?

DR keeps your systems running. It does not protect your data. A hot standby replicates your production environment in real time including corrupted files, ransomware-encrypted data and accidental deletions. If production is compromised, your DR site mirrors the compromise.

BaaS maintains independent, immutable copies of your data that DR cannot touch. You need both. One without the other is a gap your next incident will find.

Our IT team runs nightly backups to our own servers Why is that not enough ?

Three reasons. First, your backup server is on the same network as your production environment. Ransomware reaches it. Second, you have never tested a full restoration under pressure at 2AM when the business is down. Third, your backup server is in the same building as your production server.

We store backups on a foreign cloud What is the actual legal risk under DPDP?

Significant. Under DPDP, personal data of Indian citizens must remain within Indian jurisdiction with verifiable residency. A foreign-parented cloud provider storing your backup copies is subject to that country’s law including compelled access by foreign authorities.

When the Data Protection Board asks where your citizen data is, “on a foreign cloud in an Indian region” is not a clean answer. The penalty for failure to implement adequate security safeguards is up to ₹250 crore. Your backup architecture is a compliance decision, not just an IT decision.

What happens to our backups if ESDS itself faces an outage ?

Your backup data is distributed across multiple geographically separated ESDS Tier III data centers: Nashik, Navi Mumbai, Bengaluru and Mohali. A single site outage does not affect your backup copies. Each data center has N plus N redundant power, cooling and connectivity.

In twenty years of operations, no client has lost backup data to an ESDS infrastructure failure. We do not ask you to trust that record. We put it in the SLA with defined remedies.

How do we know our backups are actually restorable ? We have never tested them

You do not. That is the problem. Most organizations discover their backups are broken when they need them. ESDS BaaS includes scheduled restoration testing, not simulations, actual data restoration to a test environment, validated against the original, documented in a report your auditors can sign off on

If a backup copy fails a restoration test, we identify and resolve the issue before it becomes a crisis. Testing is not optional. It is included.

Our regulator is asking for proof that citizen data can be erased completely across all copies Can you demonstrate this? ?

Yes. ESDS BaaS supports automated, verifiable data erasure across every copy: primary backup, warm storage, cold archive and replication. Erasure is logged, timestamped and documented. The erasure report is producible on demand for the Data Protection Board, CAG or any regulatory body.

What is your SLA if backup data is lost or unrestorable when we need it?
